I think that it's time that i explain this seal that you see in the background of this blog, for like everything else here, it took a lot of thought to come up with.
Discription:
*On a Griffiths Tartan, a buckler gules embodered and crossed sable; saltire-wise four trinity-knots argent upon the buckler; foremost a gryffin rampant or, and two stones, in dexter azure and sinister of the third, upon the border; of the third upon the border, in chief "GRIFFING" for the house and in base "MICAH 6:8" for motto.*
1) On a Griffiths Tartan
a. The Griffing family gets its name from the Welsh family of Griffith , which was the ancient royal line of Wales which traces it’s lineage from the ancient Pendragon line of Arthur. Moreover, the name Griffith comes from Gyr Fith or “great faith” and our family will forever be marked by the faith of our fathers. The Colley family name also hales from Wales , and thus the foundation of the family crest. The use of a tartan and badge harkens to the many Scottish lines that are in the Griffing lineage, including Forbes and Stewart clans.
2) A buckler gules embodered and crossed sable
a. The ring and cross that make up the frame of the shield shows Nordic, German and Cherokee heritage. The round shield of the Viking, the Iron Cross of the German, and the ring and cross symbol of the Cherokee all have place, for they are all present.
3) foremost a gryffin rampant or
a. The griffin or gryphon, is a primarily Irish symbol, which shows the Irish roots and heritage of the family, furthermore, the griffin is a symbol of the dual nature of Christ, and shows the centrality of Jesus in the family, and the place of Honor that He is given.
4) saltire-wise four trinity-knots argent upon the buckler
a. The trinity knots in the corners of the shield show that the family is built on sound doctrine and a Trinitarian world view. Also, the Celtic knots reinforce that though we have many headwaters in our lineage, we are and always will be a Celtic family, and will cherish our Celtic Christian heritage.
5) Two stones, in dexter azure and sinister of the third
a. The sapphire and diamond are the birth stones of the Patriarch (Sapphire for September) and Matriarch (diamond for April), of the Steve Griffing family, and show that the home is established in unity of a man and a woman, who came together to form a household for Christ.
6) of the third upon the border, in chief "GRIFFING" for the house
a. The name Griffing is embossed on the upper arch of the shield.
7) In base "MICAH 6:8" for motto.
a. The reference Micah 6:8 is embossed on the lower arch of the shield, and the verse is the family motto.
“He has shown thee, oh man, what is good, and what the Lord requires of thee; but to do justly, and to love mercy and to walk humbly with thy God.”
Thanks to Josh Griffing for the heraldic discription of the Griffing seal. (Also, I recently discovered that you're not supposed to put a metal next to another metal, (in my case, gold next to silver)... oh well, I'm not recreating the crest to please every heraldic purist out there.
ReplyDeleteThe fundamental reason for this "law" is visibility--dark colors like black and blue don't contrast well at their interfaces, and neither do light colors like white (silver) and yellow (gold), especially if flat paints are the only things available to the knight-errant (read "low-income bachelor") to color his shield with. There are, of course, quite a few exceptions to this rule. And to every other venerable Law Of Heraldry.
